April–May: Turtles arrive
Female loggerheads return from their ocean feeding grounds to the beach where they were born. The first turtles begin arriving at Iztuzu from late April. Spotting them in the water is possible from this point.
Dalyan enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. With over 300 sunny days a year, it is a reliably warm destination from April through October, and pleasantly mild even in the depths of winter. The sea temperature reaches a glorious 27–29°C in August and September, and stays warm enough for swimming well into October.
What this means in practice is that there is no truly bad time to visit — but each season has a distinct character. High summer is brilliant if you want blazing beach days and a lively town; spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing, wildlife watching and a quieter pace; winter suits those who want the ruins and river to themselves.

Females come ashore at night to lay their eggs, digging deep nests in the sand above the high-tide line. Each turtle may lay 3–5 clutches of 70–120 eggs across the season. DEKAMER scientists monitor and mark every nest.
After approximately 60 days of incubation, hatchlings begin emerging from nests at night. The tiny turtles instinctively head towards the brightest horizon — the sea — and swim away into the Mediterranean. It is one of the most moving wildlife spectacles in Europe.
